Five decades ago; a time when computer networking was in its infancy, an astonishing discovery was made. Communication between computers could be made hundreds of times more efficient while at the same time bypassing all security measures. It was the solution that the network creators sought. Unfortunately, before the procedure could be documented- its creator, a brilliant mathematician named Arthur Chrystall, was killed in an automobile accident. What became known as Crystall’s Solution emerged as the most elusive treasure in the computer era. “Find the Solution, and the world is your’s” was the mantra. Governments, militaries, intelligence agencies and universities spent decades searching for the code, unsuccessfully.

Today the process, worth untold billions to companies and governments around the world, may have been discovered. To the right buyer it represents the ultimate weapon in the computer age; but only if it’s existence remains an absolute secret. Anyone with even remote knowledge of the Crystall Solution’s discovery must be eliminated, including computer specialist Rick Macey.

Shaken out of their peaceful existence on a sleepy Caribbean island, Rick Macey and Kay Summers, try to piece together why seemingly unrelated people are being killed. The clues lead them from coast to coast as they try to stay one step ahead of a killer while trying to unravel the mystery with ties to Rick’s past.

In the end, it becomes a race against time. Macey has to make the hardest decision of his life. Protect himself from an extraordinarily lethal killer and the government agencies pursuing him, or protect the entire world from the most damaging electronic weapon ever conceived.

Unexpected allegiances are formed as Rick and Kay race to uninvent the process. If they fail, it’s the end of privacy, the end of electronic security, and ultimately, the end of secrets.

Meet the characters.

Who am I?

I know where I’ve been, and I know what I’m capable of – but I’m not completely sure who I am. I was built by the United States armed forces to be a weapon. They spent tens of millions of dollars making sure that I could perform in any situation and complete any mission. Then, because of the ego of an inept politician, they let me go.

My particular skill-sets and my… resume if you will, don’t really prepare me for many positions in the regular world. At least, nothing legal. I’ve killed, captured, destroyed, kidnapped and blown-up, people and places around the world. Seriously, look into my eyes. Go ahead, look at the picture. If I tell you I could kill you right now, you’d believe me right?  You’d be smart to.  I’m very lethal. I’m very good at doing very bad things.

I’ve also recently discovered, the hard way, that if I’m not acting on behalf of my country I’m probably doing something horribly wrong. I’m not sure what’s next for me.  I’ll start with some travel. The world is a big place, and if I keep looking, I might find a place where I fit in.

Who am I?

I’m… in love? At least I think I am anyway, it’s been a very long time. It’s also not something I just want to say. I’m trying to be sure, and I’m trying to be honest.

I’m that first to admit I did a very bad thing. I paid a price for it too. My best friend, my condo, even my car, all gone. But, like a lot of bad things, something good can come from it.  In this case, it was Kay Summers coming into my life. Best of all, despite how we met, she’s sticking around.  That’s a really good thing. She’s smart, beautiful, easy-going, and just plain wonderful. Jesus, do I sound like a chick or what.

Work is starting to get in the way though.  We’re on this semi-permanent vacation but every day I have to get up and crank out an hour or two of work. I’m okay with the actual work I guess, but I really don’t like the way it drags me back to the real world. Every day it’s the same thing, like waking up from a dream and having to face the real-world again.

I’m trying to do a little extra every day so I can maybe get out of it.  Seriously, you meet someone as wonderful as her, and you want to spend every minute with her.  Another month or two and most of my accounts can be turned over to someone, maybe internal, maybe another consultant. Either way I’m trying to get out of the firewall management game.

The only other thing I have going on right now is this little oddity from way back in my college days.  Nothing major, a little name mix-up in a database somewhere.

Well… nothing major, except people are getting killed left and right.  I’ll let you know how that turns out.

Kay Summers

Who am I?

I’m… happy.

Wow, I’m surprised that that was the first thing that came to mind. I guess it’s true though, I must really be happy right now. I know what you’re thinking, I’m kind of living in a permanent vacation, who wouldn’t be happy? That’s not it though. At least, that’s not all of it.

I’ve been skiing in South America for a few weeks and now diving on a Caribbean island for a couple more weeks. You might think that that’s all good, but you have to remember a couple things.

The entire world as I knew it ended just a few months ago; so why am I happy?

Rick. Around him I can be me. Not work me or church me; me me. I can be myself and for the first time it kind of feels like I’m really discovering myself. You know, who I am when I’m not acting or pretending due to social expectations.

You know what? I like myself this way.

Don’t get me wrong, I was always likeable to other people, but now I’m likable to myself. It feels good. It also feels good to be with another person. To have someone who’s interested in me, and I’m interested in them. I’ve always been searching for that, but now I realize that it was pretty unlikely I was ever going to find it back in Utah.

So, there’s this little mystery that Rick has to solve, and then we’ll figure out what to do next.
